It’s Only a Cigarette Butt

When I was a little kid my grandfather would pay me a penny for every cigarette butt I picked up from the ground in his yard. There was hundreds of them every time. Of course I would dump some back out and recount them for a little extra money. Isn’t that cute?

No it’s disgusting!

Its only a cigarette butt…

Only a cigarette butt?

They only take until infinity to biodegrade even after being pooped out by the animals who sometimes consume them.

They only leach hazardous chemicals into the ground and end up in in the ocean.

How is that people have become increasingly conscientious about recycling and renewable energy while at the same time indifferent to littering of cigarette butts? If someone threw a candy wrapper on the ground eyewitnesses would be (or act) disgusted. Matter of fact nobody who still litters would even do it in front of people, unless of course it’s a cigarette butt being flicked or crushed into the ground.

Cigarette butts are the single most littered item on the planet.

Open your eyes.

Isn’t it nice to walk barefoot on the beach and feel the cigs between your toes?

Ever see a leaf blower create a whirlwind of cigarette butts and fast food wrappers? Hey at least people pick up the junk that’s refundable for cash.

A few years back most people seemed indifferent to smoking in public places and around children. Some people probably even said…

Its only a cigarette.

Fortunately that’s a thing of the past for the most part. But apparently flicking butts is still perfectly acceptable. Its not littering.

Its only a cigarette butt.

Maybe there is a correlation between people who disregard their own health and people who disregard the environment. Or maybe there’s a connection between evil corporations and the disregard for both.

Look on the bright side. They are now manufacturing green butts that break down quickly and even sprout grass and flowers.
